In 1986, Mass Programme for Functional Literacy was launched with the motto "Each one teach one". Our teachers and students volunteered enthusiastically, by not only teaching the learners in the slum area near the college, but also by educating maid servants and their children at home.
By 1987, the number of learners increased to 260. Since the need for teaching skills was felt, a stitching center was started in the near by slum area, Annanagar.
Appreciating the efforts of the institution, in 1988, ten non-formal (Adult Education) centers were allotted to the college by the AE department of the university, under the Satat Shiksha and Vistar Karya karan launched by UGC. Special training was given to the AE officer and student instructors of the college. Study materials and financial aid were received from the university.
The year 1990-91 marked a milestone, when learners from our AE centers appeared for the class V examination, conducted by the M.P Board of Secondary Education .One of our learners achieved first class with 67% marks.
Gradually, the field started expanding and new dimensions were added .The learners in the slum areas were imparted knowledge about health hygiene, balanced diet, common diseases and their prevention, vaccination and Pulse polio, family planning, blood donation, eye donation, AIDS awareness etc. Rallies, street plays, songs, slogan, posters etc. are the various means by which awareness is created in slum areas.
Doctors and social workers are invited to deliver lecture on healthy life styles. Lectures are also organized on 'mental ailments', its detection and prevention. Awareness of fatal diseases like Hepatitis - B, cancer etc is created. Importance of breast-feeding, pre-natal and post-natal care etc explained by experts.
Awareness programmes are also organized to highlight the ill effects of tobacco and alcohol. The students conduct rallies, prepare slogans and even impart personal counseling in the slums, to enable them to get rid of their evil habits.
Programmes are organized to highlight the environmental resources and their prevention; the causes of pollution and how they can be removed. The students are encouraged to create awareness about the need for conservation of environment. They go around in the slum areas and apprise the people about the need for water and electricity conservation.
To facilitate economic independence, the women in the slum areas are informed about women's right, self-employment schemes, Govt. loans etc.
This exposure to the practical aspects of life definitely broadens their vision and enables them to understand life better.
